Talmud Torah School, of New York

About this time last year, a society was founded in New York in connection with the congregation Benai Yeshurun, worshipping in Elm Street, under the pastoral charge of the Rev. Samuel M. Isaacs, for the purpose of establishing a school under the title of "The New York Talmud Torah and Hebrew Institute." The primary object of the association is to give an elementary English education with a thorough instruction in Hebrew and the religion of Israel; and though the school has not been quite a year in operation, we learn in a letter from the reverend gentleman above-named, who we think is the chief superintendent thereof, that it has already within its walls eighty pupils, receiving a liberal instruction in the English and Hebrew languages, under separate masters. The school is well conducted by an efficient board of managers; and although the annual expenditures exceed $1500, yet we are assured that the benefits it dispenses are so fully appreciated by a discerning public, as to leave no doubt of its complete success.

We hope to be favoured with more ample details of this excellent institution, (something like which has been so long needed in every city in this country,) by its managers and the reverend gentleman who may well be styled its father; and we trust that the spirit displayed by our New York friends may be emulated by the Israelites of all our American congregations. Want of space prevents us from enlarging more in our present number.
