Our contemporaries in England and France boast that they have a constantly increasing Subscription List and few withdrawals; we have been much less fortunate, as in a year and two months we have increased but ninety-three, and have lost at least one hundred and seventeen, and at the present moment we circulate scarcely above 510 for which we can say that we have subscribers. Our loss, from our printed list, has been 21 in Philadelphia, 5 in Chambersburg, 3 in Mercersburg, 1 in Pittsburg, 1 in Erie, and 1 in Pottsville, Pa; 1 in New Jersey; 12 in Baltimore, and 1 in Frederick, Md.; 16 in New York city, and 1 in Long Island, N. Y.; 2 in Richmond, Va.; 3 in Charleston, and 1 in Columbia, S. C.; 3 in Savannah, and 3 in Augusta, Ga.; 3 in New Orleans; 5 in Kentucky; 1 in Mobile; 2 in Ohio; 1 in Montreal; 2 in Barbadoes; 8 in St. Thomas; about 15 in Jamaica, and 5 in London, in all 117. But we are happy to say that, except about eight instances, we are sure that economical motives, but no dissatisfaction with our course, were the cause of the withdrawal which we have received. May we in this place urge upon our friends, who are anxious for the success and continuance of a Jewish organ in America, the propriety of endeavouring to increase the circulation of the Occident? The labour of which falls to our lot is heavy indeed, as the receipts will not permit us to obtain any but voluntary assistance, without running the risk of increasing a loss which we cannot afford. And sure we are, that if the subject were urged upon the consideration of American Israelites, our publication could be put upon a footing which would insure its permanency. Will our friends try to respond to this call? We hope for a favourable consideration, at all events. |
