Obituary |
On the night of the 8th of July, departed this life at Bridgetown, Barbadoes, in the 85th year of her age, Rachel, relict of the late David Lindo, Esq.—Mrs. Lindo was a native of that island, senior survivor of a highly respectable family, and oldest member of the Hebrew congregation. Although many years deprived of sight, she retained all her other senses and mental faculties, in their full influence, to the latest moment. This venerable and exemplary matron was attended to the grave by her co-religionists and several Christian friends. Baltimore has had to deplore the death of two worthy Israelites within the last few weeks, in the persons of David Israel Cohen, who departed this life on the evening of the 4th of July, aged 48; and the venerable Solomon Etting, on the 6th of August, at the ripe age of 83. Both were pious men, and in favour with their fellow-citizens, and both sank to rest as can only sink those who know that their Father is near to receive the child returning to his blessed mansions. We knew them long and well, and enjoyed their friendship almost ever since our arrival in this country; and we say but the simple truth in stating that they have left a bright example to their children, and that their memories will be blessed by their survivors. The death of both was tranquil and resigned, and of Mr. Etting we hear that with mind unclouded, and eye unquailing, he returned fervent thanks to the Giver of all good for the manifold mercies which had been bestowed on him through life; and then giving a benediction to his children, he was gathered to his fathers.—“But ye, go ye your way till the end be; and ye shall rest, and arise to your lot at the end of days.” |
