Died at St. Thomas, W. I., on the 23d of Tebeth (28th of December) last, Mr. Jacob Benjamin Wolff, eldest son of A. Wolff, Esq., of that island. Mr. W. returned, not long since, from Panama, in a disordered state of health, and his parents had the melancholy satisfaction to watch at the bedside of their dying child. In the absence of a minister of his faith, the father had himself to fulfil the additional task of preparing him for the awful change impending; and it was a happy thing, that he felt strengthened and resigned to meet his God.—May be rest in peace in the abode of the blessed. Death does not appear in his full terrors, when the aged and infirm fall beneath his arrows; but it is far different, when the young and vigorous, to whom life opens bright vistas of future enjoyment, are suddenly taken away. This has been exemplified especially in the decease of Mrs. Rosina David, wife of Mr. M. E. David, of Montreal, and daughter of Mr. J. L. Florence of Philadelphia, which occurred at Teignmouth, England, on the 8th of December (the 3d of Tebeth) last, in the 24th year of her age. Four short years ago, she left her father’s house, a hopeful bride, to travel through the Old World, with the prospect of many and happy days. But it was decreed that the thread of her life on earth should be severed in the early summer of her existence; and repeated tidings of her alarming illness in the land of the stranger summoned her mother to traverse the ocean, in the most inclement season of the year, to hasten to her daughter, who was so soon to change the temporal for the eternal, to render her that aid which none but a parent can offer. Barely nine days, however, was this privilege of being near the sufferer granted, when death closed the scene and stilled an aching heart, which had beat with noble aspirations, and carried off, to a purer life, a spirit which had felt the impulse of a hope for immortality and had learnt to lean on her God for support. Her body was brought hither for interment; and, on the 9th of February, it was consigned to the tomb, to repose amidst those who have departed in peace, according to the will of our Father, the Lord of heaven and earth. May her children live to grow up in knowledge of God and an enlightened piety, so that men may say, “Happy she who bore these, and happy they who reared them.” |
